Hi Anita! I’ve heard a lot of people say that. Truth is, most everyone harbors ugly beliefs about something and has said and done nasty things to others, including our favorite artists. Nevertheless, I understand the hurt many people feel regarding Rowling and am inclined to join the boycott.
That said, I also understand your thoughts on the matter and acknowledge that some of my favorite writers have contributed to social ills, too. It’s sometimes hard to know where to draw the line, and I would never try to shame or insult someone who arrived at a different conclusion than me about books like Harry Potter, especially when, as you say, the characters seem to represent a different perspective than the author who wrote them.
Just out of curiosity, are there any writers or other artists/performers that you have “canceled” on moral grounds? I grew up on Bill Cosby — I used to own most of his comedy albums and watched The Cosby Show religiously when I was a kid. After learning about his crimes, however, I banned him in my household; neither I nor my kids will be consuming Cosby products in the future. Frankly, the very thought of him makes me sick now, because the things he did are so deplorable and because I once loved him so dearly. Has any celebrity/artist ever made you feel that way?
